Workshops

Sarah is excited to work with organizations and tailor workshops and consultancy support to their specific needs.

Workshops currently being offered:

Mean what you say, and say what you mean

Well-intentioned parents and caregivers often get it wrong when they are swayed from their original position.  There are times when being flexible and teaching children to be flexible is vital.  There are other times when being flexible acts in direct opposition to building self-regulation in children. This workshop will encourage participants to examine their own relationship to flexibility, and support them with their skills in deciphering when flexibility should occur and when it should be abandoned. Participants will leave this workshop with an understanding as to why children crave consistency and predictability, and what occurs when a parent or caregiver changes their mind.

How to have difficult conversations with parents about their children’s difficult behavior

This workshop will explore various conversations that can be difficult for educators and care providers to have with parents and caregivers. Together we will explore feelings that accompany both sides of these conversations including fear, sadness, denial, and anger.  Participants will leave the workshop with concrete tools including: conversation starters, effective responses, and skills for speaking with families about difficult topics.

Ideal for educators in daycare and the school system

The negative impacts of well intentioned statements, including, “You’re ok”, “Good job”, and “Crisscross applesauce.”

Together we will deconstruct the intentions behind specific comments that hope to increase children’s self-esteem and contribute to the management of a large group of children. We will explore the unintended immediate and long-term impacts on children when comments of this nature are made. Participants will leave the workshop with a collection of alternative statements that are more effective in meeting their goals.

Getting ready for “Big School”

Transitioning from preschool, or home care to kindergarten is a big transition for you and your children. This workshop will move participants through what they can expect of their child’s first year in kindergarten, ranging from practical considerations to the social and emotional needs that might arise. Participants will be given information and strategies that will help diminish worry and build a plan to help ease with this important time.

Maximizing children’s well-being:

Our children are struggling with mental health challenges now more than ever. Professionals in the field of child and youth health argue a multi-pronged approach involving health care providers, schools, and families is necessary to meet the needs of children. This workshop will engage participants in meaningful dialogue about current challenges, help parents and care givers navigate the school system, and provide practical tips to make small shifts at home in order to support children’s mental health.
